The Pentecostal Movement intrigued me at one time. I asked Mary if I should join the Catholic Charismatic Renewal Movement. I certainly did not feel good or relate to many of its members. The early church, which they seemed to claim as their own, taught, “Like recognizes like”. Today they claim their movement as a return to the early church. this is a dreadful pride and not that holiness seen in the joy of Christianity that existed “unto martyrdom”. I cannot see how they can justify this claim. Mary replied quickly and of course, her answer did not suit those whom I knew on a daily basis.
“Just look at those people Michael, not in a state of the grace that sanctifies, they lay hands on people and pray; and just like psychics they conjure up spirits.” Should I still go? “You may and if you do there is a gift there for you”. There was and three times, it has been repeated.
One of the last times as two women prayed in tongues, in answer to my prayer, I heard as a thought in my head, “They are praying to Saraph.” I had no clue whom Saraph was at that time. A moment later I was even more astounded, “They wish to fornicate with the serpent”. I found the passage in scriptures. It is in Numbers 21 verse 6. In my bible, a catholic one, it calls the serpents with the fiery bite sent amongst the complaining Jews a saraph. Does Mary see their prayers as complaints or as I heard a request for an adulterous relationship with Her Son’s enemy? You should answer that I already have for my conscience and the sake of my soul.
Of course, those educated in Catholic Schools before the onset of today's dreadful religious programs would know about the Mystery Religions as both a heresy and a thorn in Paul’s side (heart). As for the Holiness of Tongues what a dreadful assumption, they make. Paul places it in the low gifts outside of sanctifying grace. Paul adds tongues to Christ’s words. Christ had pointed out that using His Name to prophecy, raise the dead etc could be denied by Him and the claimants sent to that place whose existence many deny. They claim that charismatic gifts died out in the early church. I say they died out just as the martyrs were dying to build up the Church, obviously not needed. The early Church acknowledged tongues not as glossalia but as Xenonalia, Read St John Chrysostom on the subject. Xenonalia is the description of the Languages used by the Apostles as they went with zeal to convert the Jews, Gentiles and Pagans on the first Catholic Pentecost.
Let me tell you another episode. I wanted so badly to approach the purity that comes from, leads to a perfect love of God. I approached a local native healer who conducted sweat lodges to find out if it could be of any assistance to me. He described his techniques. First, he made a little hut, which excluded light; inside he lit a small fire in a ring of stones. This is what he said happens one enters this hut in the darkness and is faced with a glowing fire. Remind you of anywhere? While there, you sweat and pray. How do you pray? I pray in the ancient tongue of my elders. How do you know you are doing it right? How do you know if the devil is not present working and tempting? He reached into his pocket and pulled out five or six highly polished colored stones. “These are the spirits of my ancestors they will tell me”
I went straight to the Church to apologize, as I opened the door to the Blessed Sacrament Room, a loud, strong, angry voice told me I am the Lord thy God, I brought you out of the
“THE SUNDAY OF THE PARALYTIC.”
July 16th. 2006
Homily by the Bishop Severian, Eparch of
The episode of the miraculous cure that Jesus bestowed upon the man who suffered a paralysis presents to us an occasion to reflect that this paralytic can represent to us a person who is paralyzed spiritually or is a lukewarm Christian. In the first one there is no supernatural life, because the lack of divine grace, lost through grave sin. The latter is one who abuses God's grace or does not profit from it - does not cooperate with it.
The episode that we are meditating today tells us not only of the physical cure of the person, but even more of the spiritual cure of his soul. Jesus saw his long lasting suffering as a penance, and He became merciful towards him, giving him health to his body, but also by giving him forgiveness of sins, thus curing his soul, saying: "Have courage son, your sins are forgiven".
(Mt. 9:2) It seems that he became sick because of some sin. We therefore see that to be cured from a spiritual paralysis one needs faith and hope and a determined will to get rid of sin - to be cured from spiritual sickness.
At this time, let us also meditate upon the words of admonition that Jesus spoke to another paralytic whom he cured in
How many children born of alcoholic, drug addicted parents and those who abused sex are born with all kinds of handicaps or are even physical invalids. We must ask ourselves who are those who suffer. They, who suffer, are not only the individuals who have abused, through their addictions.
Let me put it straight and to the point, besides the one who mentally, physically and spiritually sinned. There is the wife, husband or children who suffer. All of them parents and children become a burden to society, and we pay heavily through taxes for treatment so everybody suffers. These are only three sins of abuse that cause problems in human lives. There are many others, like pride, envy, jealousy, imprudent ambition, hate and gullibility. Yet Christ is ready to tell each one of us: Get up, arise from your fall into sin, and walk the road of Christian living. Remember Christ wants to see in us a strong will to be cured of our spiritual illnesses and weaknesses. The sign of a weak will is the lack of any progress in our spiritual life. This is when we have no strength to get up and go the
Dear brothers and sisters in Christ! Let us ask our conscience today: Do we truly know how to value the examples and teachings of Jesus, His life and sacrifices, especially His death on the cross to bring us the grace of salvation? Do we treasure the fact that He instituted the Sacraments of Confession and Communion, especially Confession? This Sacrament is the Bethsidic bath of Supernatural Love and Grace that can heal the paralysis of a sinful soul. Do you know how truly valuable these Sacraments are in our Christian lives? Let us remember that we will be unable to be cured from our sins if we distance ourselves from Christ who is the fountain of our salvation. I remind you that those who come to Him with faith, hope and love, will come away from Him cured, cleansed, happy and elevated to the spiritual, supernatural life of grace in Him. So let us turn to Jesus Christ and accept His word that we will be cured through faith in the Lord!
