Foolish Vows and Blind Obedience
The Church today teaches and expects obedience to be blind. We are, and in particular the priesthood, are implicitly demanded to be faithful and loyal to our superiors, never have I heard in recent times we need to obey God. Each and every one of God’s creation of the sixth day get free will from God Himself a gift given gratuitously. We should know He does no violence to our will. It is an act of impertinence offered to Him that His actions are circumscribed and set apart and we are not allowed to use this gift. There are those who will say some are just not capable of understanding, this is true, but if the priests have been properly formed, then for them it is not so. We should have been taught to inform our consciences, accepting the deposit of faith to be the origin of our catholic spirituality. In medieval times, and before, when the faithful in the majority were relatively uneducated peasants a lack of understanding through a lack of knowledge was the norm and we had to listen to our fathers in the faith. The three attributes of God, His Divine intellect, are memory understanding and will, and we can consider in those early times,we were as laity deprived of two of them by a force of circumstance. This was a lack of knowledge of God and how can you love something completely we know incompletely? The peasant of former times did not lack either conscience or intelligence, only knowledge and revelation. I have often wondered if the renewal of Vatican 2 that strange new Pentecost was in its dreadful way a means of the of the hierarchy to turn us back into those knowledgely dumb peasants. This present form of blind obedience should horrify us today. It causes resentment leading to the private revelations of so many in the Church, obviously not from God. The kind of private revelation we hear of today is one of which tells us there should be women priests. This is only one of the many errors that originate in the lack of obedience pervading the Church as we dismiss Christ’s directive. “If you love Me! then you will keep My commandments”. This is the real error that has grown to enormous proportions in the Church, it is “A LACK OF CHARITY”, towards God. We see this in at the Eucharist when we deliberately try to receive Him without the grace that sanctifies. Many go receive Him with the debts of our sins unpaid or not attempting to do penance in any way, not in the right disposition. Yet we are no longer told of the Church’s teachings, those who are not properly disposed to receive do not receive the effective graces of Holy Communion with God. Did Christ not say, “You will remain in prison until every debt is repaid?
A man, with a true vocation to be Him, an act of God’s special grace choosing him to be Christ, destined by grace to be a shepherd of His Flock should be governed by conscience and a desire to love Him as Christ directed,. There is no way his, the priest’s conscience should be directed but rather he should vow to defend the Church, the Mystical Body of Christ. I fail to see many times over the Christ of whom we have been taught let alone the sign of apostleship in many bishops today. I am not advocating anarchy although if approached many of the Hierarchs will not examine themselves to consider there is any truth in this poverty-stricken thought, although from St Peter Canesius down through the ages to St Charles Borremeo many hierarchs have declared even a pontiff that is wrong must be corrected.
This I feel would be a true renewal for which we should desire, the renewal of Charity, loving Christ enough to keep His commandments, to use His Sacraments to the full, and studying and learning the deposit of faith, then we shall receive the true meaning of mercy, the mercy of truth.
