"Nonsense and disbelief, misunderstanding the Kiss of Peace"
40 odd years ago as a young man I watched bedlam enter the Church. It was allowed in by a deliberate lack of knowledge, a studied indifference to the Church's teachings, by straight disobedience and pure stupidity. I could not understand the priests with whom I grew up in the Church, those who were my confessors and pastors how they could really be so foolish.
Un-humorously enough it coincided more or less with three facts.
1: the disappearance of the Sacrament of Confession
2: the need for entertainment demanded; surely due to the lack of grace caused by the above
3: Opinionated laity that did not listen to the rubrics as written by the Congregation of the Liturgy and Sacraments and since signed by three Popes.

You want to know is there any difference today. No it is just as bad if not worse and that is a dreadful comment on the state of the Church today. We should have by now realized and learnt from the errors caused by opinions and been called to obedience of the rubrics of the Church. We have not corrected one darn thing. Am I proud of this, no and neither should those in authority who practice disobedience. A disobedience which they demand stridently from us, while judging us and our actions in the light of their demands.

First: realize the Kiss of Peace is optional and cannot be activated unless the Synod of Bishops involved with the Diocese, Eparchy or monastery agree and publicise the authority necessary to formally grant the Liturgical change and then, only after petitioning Rome for a confirmation of the exception or exceptions. It is a very solid statement by the Pope that Hierarchs, Bishops, Pastors or Priests cannot adjust the Divine liturgy to suit theirs or the ego's and opinion's of parish councils, committees or opinionated, self claimed lay theologians. Habits that are caused by disobedience of the Rubrics should not become authorised. That is putting the cart before the horse.

Second: realize when the petition to Rome is granted and it seems only the American Council of Bishops have applied and received permission (although my information is dated and may not be accurate) they also received another severely restrained exception and that is the Priest can only leave the altar on special occasions. funerals are one and that is to give condolences only to the close relatives or to greet important dignitaries who are are present. Even that presupposes these guests can receive the forgiveness of sins that brings peace in one's soul. Can this apply to Politicians's who support abortions I ask??

Third; realize Altar servers under no circumstances are allowed to leave the altar, even to greet their parents, brothers. sisters or friends.

Fourth: realize the faithful present can only greet or offer peace to those beside them, not in front or behind nor several pews away.

Why the reason for the Kiss of Peace or the opinionated reason given by so many who know no better? They use Christ's prohibition to leave your gift at the altar and ask forgiveness of those you have sinned against entirely out of context. This is utter stupidity. What I ask do you do about the guy who cut you off driving to church who you determinedly cussed out omitting no disgusting thoughts on his intelligence? Your neighbor who you condemned to everlasting torture for driving over your son's bike. If you do not do this, go to them and apologize for your comments, while carefully dodging his punches of road rage etc., then what is the use of the Kiss of Peace at church? None I think. Nothing has changed you are still a sinner receiving Christ how would you describe the state of your soul as you do? Remember you have still have not forgiven or asked for forgiveness of all you have wronged. Your action of receiving Christ is a fallacy of unheard of futility. What many of us are guilty of is placing an optional rite, questionable in its action spiritually, above the Sacrament of Confession. For whatever reason, the wisdom of those who went before us dropped the action. One reason I know off was the size of the congregations and the deacon was chosen and authorized in the Liturgy on our behalf. It is like catechumens leaving the Church at the canon of the Mass, another fallacy since they left originally so as the Priest was not known to the Authorities General Absolution was started when the whole congregation openly confessed their sins. The scandal caused gave rise to one on one confession with the Priest.

The Church teaches that the priest represents at the Sacraments, the Holy Mysteries, Jesus the Judge and also our brothers and sisters
and we are reconciled by the rite of confession with God, the Church and our neighbors. I suggest do not let any disobedient ritual take the place of the Sacrament always remembering it is dangerous as Paul says to take the Eucharist without first confessing. How much more dangerous is it for parents to encourage their children to take communion without confessing. I have wrestled despairingly with that one.

I will take correction if you feel it is necessary but I will not accept the dreadful need and fostered and cared for by hierarchs for entertainment. As the sacrifice unfolds at the altar wonder yourself how much Christ was entertained.

Do not claim you make a good act of contrition for the Church ancients maintained and still do it is impossible for many of us to make a firm purpose of amendment without external circumstances are co compelling we really mean it.
