The Laity watches their example and acts in the same way.
Further to the last blog, I wish to make known another observation which I find disturbing. It is the number of men who stroll into our churches with hands in their pockets and the number of children who genuflect on their left knee and bless-cross themselves with their left hand.
In a conversation with a man sincere by his beliefs over the blog before this, he, I found is caught up in the minimalism of the priests. This minimalism I have written before I feel comes from the avoidance of suffering, looking for an easy life of ease and contentment. The parish priest I was very attached to as friend and I was his altar boy 6 days a week at the early morning mass taught me a great deal. He did everything he could to lead me into the priesthood. His name of my blessed memory was Canon William Percival Hayes, Vicar General of the Diocese of Clifton. The Sisters of Charity of St Vincent de Paul one Sr Joseph taught me the catechism and Sr Anthony taught me to lay out the vestments for mass and other liturgical events. I thank them just about everyday.
Before every mass I knelt with the priest and prayed for the celebration of the mass and for all present. These many years later I still do. This canon then washed his hands thoroughly explaining he was about to handle the Body of Christ and I was not to forget it. He was a clever priest, very intuitive; often when some old woman (to me at 7 to 13) came and said (often) "Wouldn't it be lovely Canon if we did this during the Mass?". He had a stock answer, "Martha", he would say, "I will pray about it and if the Holy Spirit moves me, then we shall".
I watched by learning from a priest who was stern and good, never severe just as all fathers should be.
Here then is the crux of what I have written in this blog and the one before.
"WE WATCH YOU FATHERS AND LEARN FROM YOU. FROM YOU COMES OUR KNOWLEDGE AND ACTIONS TOWARDS THE HOLY EUCHARIST AND THE TRINITY. LOOK AT YOUR CHILDREN AND ASK YOURSELF HAVE THEY LEARNT ANYTHING FROM ME".
What if you find most of the above and the one before is lacking in your flock? Will you as is a habit dismiss it as not neccessary and then learn from the liberals who claim an open mind and follow their path and yours of minimalism
