It is, in all its awful reality the true story of the RCIA and the catechesis of the Church today. The dreadfullness of the truth in this comment shows that many priests and bishops have placed the future of eternity into the hands of nincompoops and then sat back and smiled at their handiwork. Really they are smiling at their own duplicity. I can only hope and pray Father they know not what they do.
I'm sorry but this mutual back-patting doesn't concede the point that there are millions of 'catholics' who do support abortion, and not just those among the professional laity and clergy and academia
- In some US states the abortion rates among catholics is higher than the state average [and I simply won't go into racial or social-class profiling but we all know these are factors]; and yes we may consider Joan Chittister as some raving maniac ; but many , and I mean ‘MANY’ support her positions. Maybe not so vociferously or dogmatically - but they do!
We need to face facts: How many 'ordinary' catholics postulate:
"What's wrong with abortion when the alternative means social deprivation for both mother and child?"
The concept that there could be anything possibly wrong with abortion in the case of rape or incest is beyond them - that battle's lost!
How many support euthanasia? "What's wrong with dying with a little pain-free dignity when I want to?"
How many think, there's nothing wrong with gay sex and gay marriag, and pre-marital sex and divorce and I'm sorry; irrespective of how many of us think John Paul II set about a revolution with his theology of the body reinvigorating NFP - the plain and simple fact is he didn't - most catholics see nothing wrong with that pill or bit of rubber....
...and people not only believe and defiantly state that the church is wrong ; they expect the church will change - eventually...and this is before we get onto their support of women priests, married priests and the destruction of all that's authentically catholic to promote 'christian' and inter-faith unity...
How many believe Jesus was God? They think the virgin birth is a delusional myth; never believed in the assumption; believe the miracles are mere fairy stories to set up the position of the man who said 'let's be nice to each other' - and the church isn't teaching that niceness - enmeshed with all its cruel legalism and insensitivity towards those on the margins of society...
How many create their own version of reality and not merely a cafeteria catholicism ; but more a fondue-'faith-position' where they dip whatever they bloody well please into the melting pot and demand that because it's coated to resemble a personal faith it must be called catholic - however distasteful and poisonous....?
The Church has not made its voice heard - especially amongst its own.
It hasn't taught, explained, informed, advised...it's abrogated all those duties and responsibilities...and when it makes attempts to remedy a situation it is now in such a position of distrust by the average catholic that any concept of obedience or respect or even giving the Church the opportunity to state its case vanishes!
What have we done?
Denied the Truth of Christ to millions!
Little wonder they refuse to listen now....
