Received a comment e-mailed to me from one of the recipients of my blog. It was simple, “you need a lot of editing. What kind of editing is that? Am I so far off base with my thoughts or so far off base with my grammar, so far of base with the Churchmen and their behavior. So I had a little time in prayer and thought about many of my thoughts and what I put into writing. I go back to the comment by a woman some months ago about I was too far into the dark. To me when I speak, listen to my brothers and sisters in Christ, and hear homilies at masses, I truly believe this woman could be right. I am surrounded by a form of darkness that is full of malevolence and spiritual hatred. I do not want to be there and neither do I wish, and dearly so for my fellow catholics to be there. I hate the darkness and the dreadful malevolent spirit that clouds the light in our souls.
I am off base with many Churchmen that is sure. I was brought up in the Church and taught from the penny catechism, taught by my father, nuns and priests. I do not see in many of the teachers today, many of the Nuns today and certainly in the majority of priests the basic knowledge of the commandments of God, the postures we should accept before God in reverence and adoration I learnt from my teachers. In fact, most priests and religious formed in the wake of Vatican 2 lack a fortitude in their convictions. Look at the priest who last week wrote that Eucharistic Adoration is not needed in these times. It is now dogmatically incorrect. They, the New Law prophets of our Faith, blow in the wind of parochial opinionated revelations that have no relationship to the times before the dreadful council. Why are there seminaries and nunneries undergoing such a renaissance that they can hardly cope? They are dreaded and dismissed, tragically scorned by liberal minds, formed only by personal opinions foisted on us by ignorant egos. You, many of you, should not forget that all the Popes since and some theologians too, have told us that Vat 2 was pastoral in nature and not to, could not change the Church’s doctrines and dogmas.
I am off base with grammar not so much as a practical problem of brainpower but from some inability to write exactly what I think. It started at 13 or 14. My ability to put pen to paper neatly just went haywire, letters transposed and I left out words. My wife of 40 odd years tells me I think too fast and cannot catch up as I write. Charity asks that you understand I have never passed a written exam since I was 14 unless I sat them three times. My competency inoral exams was always acceptable.
This week, while reading an orthodox book on theology describing love makes me wonder if any really comprehend God’s love for us. He does love us, we know, but how He does is the question? God as the orthodox theologians tell us illuminates and deifies us. Let us keep in mind everything we do causes us to descend step by step, or rise up step by step. The Hebrews firmly believed these facts, Paul certainly did. Since Christ came to fulfill the Old Law and not to change it, so must we. St Teresa of Avila writes about it and so did St John Climacus. Therefore, on our rocky hilly journey we can ascend to God in prayer or roll down the slippery slope in sinful error. This is our own very personal decision. If can we reach that mysticism taught by the Church through prayer and the sacraments, by her rituals and ordinances, we give to the Trinity every indication of our sincerity and desire to live the Life, Christ the Word demonstrated we should. We know then and only then God, as the Church teaches, condescends or leans over us and gives us the Grace that Sanctifies. As the orthodox east says deifies us as a form of transfiguration. We cannot reach this, unless by the disciplines of God and the Church.
Now God looks at us and sees Himself in us, a lesser kind of beatific vision. He now loves us with the bliss of the beatific vision that He sees as He contemplates Himself, in us, We are, maybe, the darkened mirror, the clouded glass of Paul. This is the first love blissfully He has for us from baptism and after good confessions (The Sacrament of Penance). The other Love He has, is a suffering Love because by sin we separate ourselves from Him. This love we attain is, again according to the Old Law His eyes are so pure, He cannot see the ugliness of sin (does not allow Himself, I shouldn't wonder) His love becomes for us a suffering love. We are missing from the space in His heart preserved for us.
Then and only then as we make expiation or any deep repentance for our sins, as we look to the Cross and see how we helped put Him there and seek the reasons "why" in ourselves; then as our pity for ourselves changes to pity for Him; becoming a love we cannot support ourselves or find on our own, only then can it be changed by desire that comes from Him and deeply and sincerely from the inner chamber of our soul we can perhaps expect to find a true suffering love. I mean a different a real kind of feeling that wells up as it has been written from the well spring of our heart, who lives deep in our heart, the Holy Ghost, the spirit of sanctifying grace and supernatural love. Who knows I ask how that will show?
I see from different blogs on the Internet that the fear of disease or sickness of any kind, especially the swine flu’ or any other sickness spreading through the reception of the Blessed Host is raging like a heresy in the Church once again. Where does it say in the revelations by Christ or to and then by His saints that God brought any kind of corruption into the world?? Can a conclusion be drawn from this dreadful statement? I think it could easily be seen as scandalous. We have Bishops and priests who are supposed to know better declaring publicly, their belief is the Most Holy Sacrifice of the Altar spreads disease. Does this not lead to the conjecture that for them and consequently for us in accepting their instructions it is not the Blessed Sacrament, the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ we see under the veil of bread and wine. Has it not been known since time immemorial that God in His Presence is not seen by Mankind? Is this not a scriptural part of the Old Law? If this is their, the priestly belief that is, can it really be Christ at all , for those who receive what is for them just bread and wine? I make this point because some have claimed to become ill by reception of this Bread at mass.
Unfortunately we all know how many call the Host just a symbol. We have to wonder how high is the percentage of what I call symbolic believers. How lacking in charity is this denial of Christ's implicit words in scriptures? I mean more or less calling Christ a deceiver. Lacking charity how can one join in the sacrifice and thus claim to be united in Christ.
Christ revealed this to St Gertrude, who asked about the gains made by those involved with the consecration and reception of the sacrament of Holy Communion.
‘It is true”, replied Our Lord, “that those who celebrate worthily shall shine in great glory; but the love of him who communicates with pleasure should be judged very differently from the exterior magnificence which appears in this mystery. There will be one reward for him, who has approached with desire and love; there will be another for those who has approached with fear and reverence; and another for him who is very diligent in his preparation. But for those who habitually celebrate through custom only, shall have no share in My gifts”.
Christ it would seem states without falseness that just receiving Him as a habit without real preparation, without obtaining the right disposition receives nothing nor does He share in His Gifts. That is rightly seen as no indwelling of His Holy Spirit. God’s love and truth is blissful, ignorance is not. I can give you examples where the sacrifice offered for certain petitions and people have not been efficacious. So many say God has decided to do something else instead. Is this really so that for the sacrifice we remember and celebrate with the Liturgy does not awaken the all Powerful God from the meditation of His Magnificence to celebrate with us signs of His Glory?
Later in this Saints revelations Christ explains to her how those who having easily omitted the sacrament of confession needed purifying, sometimes when the priest was available this soul was perhaps asleep not having any grave fault to confess, that is accuse herself of. Confession is a chance to speak with Jesus. We should not pass it by.
May I dedicate this work as Gertrude beloved of God dedicated hers? I believe I can use the saint’s prayer as it was hers to begin with.
I offer Thee this work, O Lord Jesus Christ, Fount of eternal light, in union with that ineffable charity which moved Thee. The Only Begotten of the Father, in the plenitude of the Divinity, to take upon Thee our nature, and so become Man. I offer it to Thee on the part of all Thy creatures, because it is Thine ineffable tenderness for mankind which caused Thee to pour forth those sweet and efficacious graces on the heart of your chosen one, to fructify them, to draw her to Thyself and unite her to Thee eternally
I beseech Thee to take this work into Thy Divine keeping, that it may glorify the omnipotence of the Father, the wisdom of the Son and the love of the Holy Ghost. I offer it to Thee in fervent thanksgiving for all the graces which Thou hast communicated or wilt communicate through this work, even to the end of time. And as I am utterly vile and an unworthy creature I offer Thee in satisfaction for all my deficiencies and omissions, my blindness and ignorance, Thy own sweet heart, ever full of Divine thanksgiving and eternal beatitude.
