A Very Crude and Rudimentary View of the Beatific Vision
The Interior Castle of St Teresa of Avila
It is no small pity, and should cause us no little shame, that, through our own fault, we do not understand ourselves, or know who we are. Would it not be a sign of great ignorance if a person were asked who he was, and could not say, and had no idea who his father or his mother was, or from what country he came? Though that is great stupidity, our own is incomparably greater if we make no attempt to discover what we are, and only know that we are living in these bodies, and have a vague idea, because we have heard it and because our Faith tells us so, that we possess souls. As to what good qualities there may be in our souls, or Who dwells within them, or how precious they are those are things which we seldom consider and so we trouble little about carefully preserving the soul's beauty. All our interest is centred in the rough setting of the diamond, and in the outer wall of the castle..... that is to say, in these bodies of ours”.
Penny Catechism Chapter One. Question 7
What does it profit a man that gains the whole world and suffers the loss of his own soul?
All Catholics should be fully aware that we were, are, will be and we come from the paternal thoughts of our Creator. We are a concept, an idea that every man or woman entering the world is first conceived in God's mind. As Jesus told St Gertrude, “When you pray for someone mention the cross and ask that all will come to pass, for whom you pray, is that what was contained in My Mind when the soul of he or she was conceived in My thought”. That is our conception spiritually. In the Mind of God who can neither commit sin, see sin nor yet can He countenance sin. We are a very small, but important to Him, part of His thoughts.
Two blogs ago I promised, if I remember rightly, to explain how important it is to me to understand what the Beatific Vision means for me. My consideration is such that every grace, every action of mine for my good comes from the Beatific Vision. We are all in a marvelous way preordained for redemption, for good, unfortunately we screw this gift up. I dare hope others may stop to consider the truth they are seeking about their relationship with their Creator and how it started. I do mean those who are catholic like me and wish to inform themselves about their relationship with the Most Holy Trinity. I would and do hold the hope those who do read this written contemplation it becomes for them, as it has for me, a point whereby we can consider our role in God's Divine Contemplation, in His Catholic Community. Using what the Church teaches on Prayer, we can with a serious effort move into the Prayer of Quiet and therefore achieve Divine Contemplation. We are all in His Contemplation and we come into existence, through it. It would not be a mistake to say we are in the Alpha part but if we take the chance Christ earned for us we will finish celebrating in the omega. I mean if we make the right choices and fulfill the Will of God, we will end there for all eternity, cherished in His thought, successfully living the time He, Jesus, earned for us.
God exists, much to the annoyance of many whose modern minds rise in a furor over the thought something can exist outside their very deliberate lack of comprehension, on their part. His self existence is a source, for those who call themselves “Contemporary Men”, of an anger, that is unscientific and thus foments such an anger in those who claim the self existence for their own prideful lives, which so often leads to an awful despair. I mean, those who call themselves contemporary men or women. These folks certainly claim a reliance on self that leads to despair which is the worst sort of pride. A pride that rises as they see nothing they can do, by themselves, can make it go right. Why God did what He did and for what ever His reasons, they enquire rudely and demandingly, why did he not show Himself to our scientific experts of today seeking their authority. God is uncreated Wisdom and the Supreme intelligence, so I often wonder why did God create me and would I, if I could, change anything?
What is the Beatific Vision? I would expect that many Catholics catechized before Vatican 2 may have a handle on what I joyfully declare as God's view of Himself arising from His Divine contemplation of Himself. Do we fill, in anyway, a hole in His need for a companionship in the vision of Himself? The Church says no, God is super-self-sufficient. She claims, He is perfect in Himself and needs nothing more to be complete, and certainly not from us. I must confess I do wonder why then it is He wants so much Love from us? Certainly when we did not exist, He got on quite well without us. Why then did He create so much trouble and perhaps heartache for Himself with and in us? We could admit to the truth of this statement if we knew just what God was up to but we do not and I for one will keep my peace over such a thought and pray how could such a perfect identity want to mar His perfection by creating some one like me. But then I have come to realize that what I am today is not what he created. I am to be honest tainted by a concupsicence He did not nor ever intend me to be this way. he gives me and you every chance to come back in Grace to Him, the grace of the Beatific Vision. I do say in a certain manner that Church is telling us a timeless truth. A timeless truth, which gives to us this mystery, why then if He is perfectly complete on His own then, why us? Nevertheless He did of His will create us. Did He feel we were needed as part of His perfect plan of Divine Contemplation. As a child learning the catechism, I heard God wanted to show He could create a creature, which when allowed to fend for itself, with free will, in some way could of its own volition seek Him. If we are in the Image and Likeness of Him by some measure of His thought, which we must believe, is our soul. It comes from Him without stain, shadow or sin. His thought of each of us, our soul, conceived in His contemplation never starts out sinful. We are expected to bring our soul, His conception, back to the eternal life He lives. Seek Him therefore by copying His perfect love, that is become righteous, as God is in Heaven, which is not only justified but also sanctified, as is God the Trinity in Heaven.
We were never created as an antidote to angelic pride, the first soul, that is a soul of what mankind was to be and should be, was a very particular soul. When heaven was shown this soul before creation began, it  caused the luciferian prideful rebellion. Revelations Chapter 12. The human soul came before Lucifer, the archangel of Light rebelled. Chapter 12 is by accommodation is applied by the Church to the Virgin Mary. (Footnotes in the Douay Rheims translation). For as it is written in Genesis, God looked at what Had created and saw that it was good. Was there a second contemplation after He had contemplated the organization of Himself within His essence, or was it one long single contemplation ongoing and eternal? It would seem so. The organization of Himself we can assume from scriptures to be a spatial area we call the Cloud of Unknowing. We can see the cloud but never penetrate Its mysteries. That cloud which the early prophets saw and as did the Hebrews as a space of fire, flame, thunderstorms and power. Remember and call to your minds the burning bush. Remember the God that occupied the Temple built for Him by the Jews. The tent in which He took up His abode amongst His people. Read the Old Testament description coined by the Hebrews and confirmed by the first elder brother, head of the family in the place of a distant father, never absent, in the New Israel, the Catholic Church, called Peter. “Almighty and eternal Father, Consuming Fire of Terrible Jealous Love” and that, I claim, is the most we can know of Him. Early on in this blog life I described the huge powerful flame that lived, lives in my mind. Find if you will the description of this flame in an earlier blog and think of what it might mean to you.
God, it seems, by Catholic Teaching contemplates Himself and see Himself, and is pleasured enormously by His thoughts. It is written we cannot see God for it would surely kill us. We can see natural things like flame, fire and hear thunderclaps, even some kind of mechanical contraption worked by the Seraphim. Safe to say to hear His voice, to many is like an enormous clap of rolling thunder, and would surely deafen us. When God contemplates and sees what He is, our Church teaches it is His Divine Contemplation. Read older books, tracts, tomes, letters and you will find you are on safe grounds in faithfully believing what and how many of our beliefs and what we are, is first seen in the Beatific Vision. A missionary father, a Benedictine, Fr Louismet Sauvignan, whom I have often recommended, writes of the Holy Trinity, God's very personal Divine Contemplation. He writes very competently and with an imprimatur. What does the almighty God see as He contemplates Himself. He sees Himself of course, another Him but surely we might offer an opinion this image is perhaps slightly inferior to Himself in perfection. This Image for want of a better descriptive word is His Son, born of the Father's thought before all ages. Matthew tells us in his chapter 14 verse 30, “My Father is greater than I.” But Christ also says “I and the Father are One”. The words I truly believe gives us the significance of the Divine Vision is in both John's, “He who has seen Me has seen the Father...I am in the Father and He is in Me”. This, shall we say “offspring” can be understood by us mere mortals as a Son, scripture also describes Christ as the first fruits. Is it not obvious we, you and I, could only comprehend this contemplation of God's by seeing the result as a Son. This would be the only way our worldly intelligence can be satisfied. May I also say there is no other way could He have sent His Word, His Law to rescue us when we lost our original innocence when a man Adam committed the first sin, and lost for us supernatural love in some way and sanctifying grace. This was our inheritance into which we were sealed by Adam and Eve's actions. Our coarse human nature would prevent the Hebrews from accepting a supernatural appearance since this contemplation would have blinded them. We do know that even now the Hebrews cannot accept Christ as a messiah. In fact the Saducees, part of the Roman appointed Sanhedrin only believed in the Mosaic Law which did not, I believe, include the prophets. Even today in the Jewish Study Bibles the commentators write how hard it is to translate Isaiah. Therefore God in His Wisdom made His Word, His Law into one of us, Jesus Christ, Saviour. He existed in God from the beginning. He arrived in this world as a man should. He came obeying all the natural laws, to help in our contemplation of the Divine Mystery that could send His Son amongst us. The Jews couldn,t but the gentiles, especially the Greeks could. Their gods had sons that committed violent atrocities against their father gods. One even castrated Zeus, I think.
Now what can we expect in the way of feelings between God the Father and the conception of what He calls, “His Son”? It has to be a form of Love that is so powerful as it “proceeds from the Father to the Son” and rebounds back, returns with all the power of the infinite, limitless power of God. It is and should be for us much stronger than Love. It is Charity, a word ill defined today, John in his First Letter written in Greek uses the word Agape. It is Love in action from Pity, Judgement, Compassion to Mercy and if we really study Christ it has a tremendous wrath against sin and is expressed as Invective and to feelings way beyond the scope of our intellects. A Charity of which we have lost the meaning. We prefer, unfortunately, to see the word Charity akin to a lesser virtue??? called Love. Love today, is a Harlequin romantic fable shown and expressed as kindness and described by supremely carnal feelings. Is there or have we given a name to this holy feeling between the Father and the Son. May I say I write of that Infinite Love of God that proceeds from the Father and the Son and travels between them both? It is a united all powerful thought of such perfection and intimate feeling. It is a consuming fire that burns so perfectly between God His Divine Contemplation of Himself and is extended beyond to us, through the Divine Conception in His thoughts, our souls. We can I believe call it our soul. A thought which exists invisibly and we or no one has truly seen, but exists in the mind of God through the grace we call sanctifying. It is a wonderful portal by which we can speak to and hear God's infinitely powerful terrible jealous Love. It is supernatural sanctifying Love. Our soul is a righteous thought started in God's mind. Our soul exists, as does God's thoughts always, for ever. In some marvelous manner this great charity freely given by God exists. Christ tells us often in the fulfillment of the Old law, the new Hebrew cult of new Israel. “If you have seen me you have seen God”, and like the ephemeral spirits we called ghosts, we named it as Holy, the Holy Ghost. It is the Divine Eternal Spirit of Supernatural Love and the carrier of Sanctifying Grace. It is a love that carries within its space???? many gifts which we now mistakenly call spirits. There is but one Holy Spirit not many and it gives to us the gifts of Wisdom etc. and the Virtues of Charity etc. What does Aquinas say about the loss of the Divine Vision?
First, in order to endure the entire punishment of sin, in order thus to expiate the entire fault. But the punishment of man's sin was not only the death of the body, but there was also a punishment in the soul: since the sin also had reference to the soul, the soul itself was also punished by the lack of the divine vision: for the removal of which, satisfaction had not yet been made. And therefore, before the coming of Christ, all men descended to hell after death, even the holy fathers. Christ, therefore, in order to endure the entire punishment due to sinners, willed not only to die, but also to descend according to his soul into hell. Whence Psalm 87:4, "I have been counted with those who have descended into the pit: I have been made as a man without help, free among the dead." For the others were there as slaves, but Christ as free. [Aquinas, In Symbolum Apostolorum, 5]
Did God not say to  Jeremiah,
"Before I formed thee in the bowels of thy mother, I knew thee: and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and made thee a prophet unto the nations".
It seems to me He knew us before we were conceived. How about you? What do you think?
If anyone reads this have your parish priest even your local ordinary go over it with you and find if it is worthy of belief. Ask your priest if he believes what he has read.

Almighty and Eternal God make my heart and mind as pure as snow then hone me so I am like crystal to Your mind?
